Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 2nd of August.
Good morning, Lowell.
Governor Healey announced the closure of all hotel shelters in Massachusetts, which caused local confusion about the former UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, but the facility will continue as a Rapid Track Shelter and CSR (Clinical Safety and Risk) through the end of 2026.
City officials confirmed Heading Home will operate the shelter to help families quickly secure stable housing while redevelopment plans for the area move forward.
Candidates, their representatives, and the public are invited to a drawing at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 8 in the Mayor’s Reception Room at Lowell City Hall—this event will decide the order of names on the September 9 Preliminary ballots for City Council Districts 3, 7, and 8, and Director of Elections Will Rosenberry will share early voting details.
