EDUCATION NEWS

  • Recent ICE activity has affected Lowell Public Schools as some students' family members were detained or deported, leaving one Lowell High student to live alone after his father was deported. Superintendent Liam Skinner emailed school leaders about the cases and said support staff including Alice Legrand (who works with the Department of Children and Families) are helping affected students while no enforcement has occurred on school grounds.  Inside Lowell
  • Last Wednesday at the Massachusetts State House, 16th Middlesex Representative Rodney Elliott of Lowell nominated teacher Andres Lopez for the 4th Annual Latino Educators Shine Awards—recognizing his work in teaching, coaching and community service at Lowell Public Schools.  Inside Lowell
  • Lowell — Greater Lowell Technical High School senior Nichollas Morais was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar Semifinalist, one of only 13 students in Massachusetts to receive the honor. He is a Salutatorian and national SkillsUSA gold medalist who will study mechanical engineering at MIT after graduation.  Inside Lowell

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sean McDonough, a condo owner at 61 Market Street, filed paperwork this week to run for District 4 City Council and said he wanted to help keep people in Lowell as residents leave the city. The 30 year old father who teaches special education (and served in the Peace Corps in Mozambique) will focus on improving downtown parking and quality of life issues as nomination papers become available June 10 with signatures due by July 22.  Inside Lowell
