COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Greater Lowell Community Foundation CEO Jay Linnehan will be honored as this year’s Acre Champion for his efforts to combat food insecurity and support local recovery—his leadership has doubled the Foundation’s endowment to $70 million. The 6 Degrees of the Acre gala is set for June 26 from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hellenic Cultural Center located at 41 Broadway Street in Lowell—music, raffles, games and food by YouthBuild will support CBA’s community programs.  Inside Lowell
  • At its April 30 Annual Meeting, the Theodore Edson Parker Foundation awarded ten grants totaling $503,500 to local organizations supporting food, shelter and youth work in Lowell. Trustees reviewed 15 regular and 9 mini grant applications and approved two multi-year commitments—funding projects that will benefit the community.  Inside Lowell

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a budget meeting on May 27th, Vice Mayor Yem led discussions after Mayor Rourke was absent. Councilors approved a $617 million budget and moved $2 million from the stabilization fund to help with a $4 million shortfall in school funding—while they also debated a $3.6 million parking loan and future parking fees.  Inside Lowell

  • Massachusetts Pirates will host the Jacksonville Sharks today at the Tsongas Center at 7:05 p.m. The 2-5 Pirates hope to break a three-game losing streak after their last win on April 19 — the Sharks are 6-2 and winning three in a row — as both teams look to shift their season's momentum.  Inside Lowell
