About this event
Join us to Learn about the Nakba: The film tells two intertwined stories: one depicting the 1948 War through archival footage and letters, the other following characters debating the war’s legacy in the present day.
Neta Shoshani’s controversial documentary about the 1948 war was banned in Israel because it exposed many of the flaws in the ethos underlying creation of the nascent state’s identity. Last year, it finally aired.
The documentary functions as a singular work, but it is divided into two parts. It is based on letters and diary entries illustrated by rare archive material, with graphic interventions that provide a historical context on a larger scale. However, multiple lines of division can be observed in Shoshani’s documentary: one between the different sides in the conflict, one between the past and the present, one between the events taking place before and after the end of the British Mandate (15 May 1948), and the main one – what is to be remembered from the war the country emerged from and what is not: https://cineuropa.org/en/newsdetail/442574/
