About this event
Twice a year, the SMFA Student Government Association (SGA) sponsors a student curator to host an exhibition of their vision. This fall, we are excited to welcome SMFA 2nd-year BFA student Alvin Zhang and his exhibition, Becoming Between. This exhibition asks the question, "Who are we when familiar ways of understanding ourselves no longer feel sufficient, and a new sense of belonging has yet to take shape?"
Between Becoming explores identity as an ongoing, unfinished process shaped by memory, relationships, personal values, and changing social conditions. It hosts artworks across media that engage with holding on, moving away, adapting, questioning, or living with uncertainty. Works might begin with childhood memories, family, language, cultural transitions, education, labor, everyday objects, belief, or social roles. And across these mediums, we weave a safe space of lingering, wandering, exploring, and questioning.
