About this event
Be on Time Follow Class Instruction Great Restoration Follows Modifications Allowed and Included Restorative yoga helps people relax by creating conditions where the nervous system can shift from alert/effort mode (sympathetic activation) into a more rest-and-repair state (parasympathetic activation). “Restorative yoga is a practice of deep rest. Through gentle poses supported by props, the body is held comfortably so the muscles can release without effort or strain. Longer holds give the breath, nervous system, and mind time to settle. As tension softens, people often experience a sense of safety, calm, improved body awareness, and a release from the constant demands of doing.” Mechanisms behind the relaxation: Reduced muscle guarding: Props support the body so the brain receives fewer “protective tension” signals. Slower breathing: Longer, quieter breaths can influence heart rate and vagal pathways involved in calming. Lower sensory input: Stillness and reduced stimulation allow the nervous system to downshift. Interoception (body awareness): Paying attention to internal sensations can help people reconnect with their bodies rather than staying in a stress-response loop. Time without performance: Unlike active exercise, the goal is not achievement or stretching deeper; it is allowing the body to be supported. Many people describe the experience as feeling like a “reset,” because the practice creates a deliberate pause from constant physical and mental activation. It can be especially useful for people who are stressed, overextended, recovering from intense activity, or having difficulty slowing down.
