Join Harvard Divinity School alumnus Seth Fleisher, MTS ’98 , for a conversation about his debut novel, The Farther Shore , with Charles Hallisey, Yehan Numata Senior Lecturer on Buddhist Literatures at Harvard Divinity School.
Inspired by the life of South African writer and naturalist Eugène Marais, The Farther Shore explores fathers and sons, memory and race, and the stories people tell to justify power. Spanning continents and timelines, the novel brings Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, and Indigenous African religious traditions into conversation. A storyline set at Harvard in the 1930s examines the era’s eugenics movement.
The conversation will explore the novel’s themes and its engagement with religion, history, and fiction.
Free and open to the public. Registration requested; seating is limited to 50. Register to attend
