November Class:
The Shabbat Table as Sacred Landscape
Class description:
Why does the Shabbat table look the way it does?
Beneath the bread, wine, and candles lies a rich tapestry of meaning connecting the staple crops of the Land of Israel, the sacred architecture of the Mishkan and Temple, and the agricultural journey of the Omer from Pesach through Shavuot.
Together, we’ll peel back layers of meaning to uncover how the Shabbat table serves as both a celebration of abundant harvest and a reimagined altar, bringing the rhythms of the land and memories of sacred space into the home.
Drawing on the insights of Israeli ethnobotanist Noga Hareuveni, we’ll explore how every Shabbat meal can be understood as a reenactment of the relationship between people, land, and holiness.
