About this event
ππΏ class may include hands-on adjustments for consenting students A dynamic and vigorous vinyasa-style practice, Mysore classes are essentially one-on-one instruction (as opposed to the ubiquitous "led" class format where a teacher verbally instructs the group of students simultaneously). The Mysore room is quiet. There is minimal talking because concise instruction, demonstration, and hands-on assists are the primary means of conveying knowledge in this methodology. In Mysore, you will learn and practice Ashtanga's primary, secondary, and advanced series sequentially at your own pace, receiving individualized instruction as needed from the teacher and assistants. Postures are given to students one at a time, and as you gain stamina, focus, and become proficient in these poses, new asanas are added. Each inhale and exhale accompanies a specific set movement, and as you memorize where to breathe and move (and the Sanskrit names of each pose), you begin to experience the power of this practice. While the sequences are physically demanding, they can be suitable for students of all ages and abilities because learning the series sequentially with individualized instruction allows practitioners to develop the strength and flexibility needed to progress in a safe and balanced manner. Interested in beginning a Mysore practice? Start by observing a Mysore class: come to the Harvard Square studio at 7:15am on a day Mysore is taking place. Quietly enter the studio, introduce yourself to the teacher, and then observe to become familiar with the Mysore practice, the primary series of postures, and the Ashtanga counting system. Discuss start day and time with the teacher and arrive that day and time, ready to practice. The teacher will individually instruct the beginning of the Primary Series. Continue to practice at the studio a minimum of three mornings per week. Each consecutive day of instruction will build on the previous day with a focus on deepening and perfecting the point of focus (drishti) and the breath that is part of each pose (asana). Individual guidance and modifications from the Ashtanga faculty create an intimate relationship between the student and the practice. Note that Mysore practice does not take place on the days of full or new moons. Additional questions about Mysore? Contact registration@downunderyoga.com
