About this event
Wampanoag people have lived in the land that is now Massachusetts since time immemorial, but Wampanoag art was largely invisible in the MFA’s galleries until the acquisition of Elizabeth James Perry’s >Weatchimin belt in 2021. Explore the stories of four contemporary Wampanoag artists—Hartman Deetz (Mashpee Wampanoag), Julia Marden (Aquinnah Wampanoag), Elizabeth James Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag), and Ramona Peters (Mashpee Wampanoag)—now represented in the Museum’s collection. Discover how their works in wampum, textiles, and installation art not only reshape our understanding of the past but help us better see the present.
