About this event

Indian poet and photographer Sudeep Sen and Japanese scholar and translator Rina Kikuchi share their work and discuss how poems cross languages and borders. Tufts Journalism students will introduce them. Sudeep Sen is a poet, translator, artist, and editor. He studied English literature at the University of Delhi and was an Inlaks Scholar at Columbia University, where he earned an MS in journalism. He is recognized as one of India’s finest poets and has published more than a dozen collections of poetry. These include The Lunar Visitations (1990), Postmarked India: New and Selected Poems (1997), Lines of Desire (2000), Distracted Geographies (2003), Rain (2005), and Aria (2011), which won the A.K. Ramanujan Translation Award. Two volumes of new and selected poems and translations appeared as Fractals: New & Selected Poems | Translations 1978–2013 (2013) and Fractals: New & Selected Poems | Translations 1980–2015 (2015). Recent collections include Incarnat | Incarnadine (2017) and Path to Inspiration (2017), with Setsuko Klossowska de Rola and Homa Arzhangi.

Rina Kikuchi is a literary scholar and poetry translator. She has been Professor of Literature at Shiga University, Japan, since 2005, and Adjunct Professor of Poetry at the University of Canberra, Australia, since 2018. Her research focuses on Japanese women’s poetry of the Asia-Pacific War. She often translates collaboratively, through co-translation with monolingual poets and “poet-trio translation.” Her translations include Poet to Poet: Contemporary Women Poets from Japan (2017, with Jen Crawford), Pleasant Troubles (2018, with Harumi Kawaguchi), and The Selected Translations of Sagawa Chika’s Poems (2023, with Carol Hayes). She is a 2026 Obermann Fellow at the University of Iowa, where she works with participants in the International Writing Program, and she is co-editing a bilingual anthology of contemporary Japanese women’s poetry with Crawford.

Food & Drink will be provided. This event is open to the public!
