Since 2000, malaria control has averted more than two billion cases and saved nearly 13 million lives. Yet that progress has stalled, and it was never evenly shared. Some districts are approaching elimination while others carry most of the burden. Climate change, human mobility, and drug and insecticide resistance are redrawing the map of risk. At the same time, the funding that powered two decades of gains is contracting.

Countries are responding by moving away from blanket coverage toward subnational tailoring (SNT): using routine surveillance, modeling, and local evidence to decide which interventions go where. Targeting can stretch shrinking budgets further, but only if the data, analysts, and institutions behind it hold up. This conversation brings together four leaders working on each piece of that problem.

This event is sponsored by the Center for African Studies at Harvard University , Harvard’s Defeating Malaria: From the Genes to the Globe Initiative , and the Nigerian Student Association at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Harvard T.H. Chan School hosts a diverse array of speakers, invited to share both scholarly research and personal perspectives. They do not speak for the School, and hosting them does not imply endorsement of their views, organizations, or employers.
